Winter Newsletter from Bill Frank, President/CEO of CareerLab

Friends,
I've jumped into the Twitter-fest with a series of comments (tweets) about career success, motivational quotes, gratitude, and life happiness. You can follow me on http://twitter.com/BillFrank. Here are a few Twitter updates.

Just for fun I counted our corporate clients, and they total 350. Our next target is 500. This level of experience means we're not beginners. You can trust us. We know what we're doing.

If you're in the job market at $50,000+ you should certainly broadcast your letter and resume to recruiters nationwide (even if doing a local search). The best place to do that is right here.

September 2008 marked our 30th Anniversary as leaders in the career strategy market. Part of the excitement was rolling out our new website, www.cover-letters.com: "1,001 FREE cover letter examples for consultants, career-changers, and job hunters." The official launch date was 08.08.08 — it's live now!

As I was posting these letters online, I realized I want to communicate my love for consulting. It's just a great business. The single letters, taken together, may create a picture of enjoyment, but in a burst of creativity I listed some of the reasons consulting is such a good fit for me—and perhaps for you, too. Here are 25 Reasons I Love Consulting.

In a busy world where we're slammed . . . and expected to do it all, this article
"Find happiness: Get your life on one page"™ (L1P™) may serve as a welcome guide. Let me know.

I've listed a bunch of neat productivity tools on our Gifts page. One I'm particularly fond of is the Data Deposit Box. I've explained my fervor in an article called, "Whoa! Don't risk losing your valuable computer data."

Three years ago we celebrated by moving to newer offices, just a bit south of Park Meadows, and a short hop from the new light rail terminal at Lincoln Avenue. The new headquarters is a block from my house, so I can walk to work—which, of course, I never do. We've renewed the lease for two more years, so we'll be here awhile.

My first office, which was a spare bedroom in my house, consisted of a desk, lamp, small bookcase, and rocking chair. Home computers hadn't been invented yet.

We grew to occupy 3,700 square feet of class-A space, linked by a computer network with all the latest hip-and-happenin' gadgets. And our client list grew by leaps and bounds. I remember adding Coors as client number 12. At last count, we've been honored to serve 300 more. And revenues grew from startup to $1,000,000 in 1995—all with only four consultants. In 30 years I figure I've spent 30,000 hours talking to folks about their careers and management teams. My greatest joy is taking someone who is already successful to a much higher level.

We hosted ExecuNet [an executive networking group] for five years, and the TOP-12 [Human Resources leaders in Colorado] for three years. I sold 100,000 copies of my first book 200 Letters for Job Hunters, then we made it available by subscription. Now it's FREE again at www.cover-letters.com. Amazingly, the original book is still selling. I was amused to learn you can get a used copy for $.52 on eBay. [Shipping is $3.94.]

We built an Internet-hosted program called "The Executive Portfolio" which allows anyone to build a career-marketing website online—then licensed it to Lee Hecht Harrison, global leaders in career development.

Now, I've written a series of career and leadership columns for the Denver Business Journal. I use the Birkman assessment and leadership tool a lot, both for high-level career transition, executive coaching, and management teams. It's perfect for setting high-school/college-age kids on the right path. The Center for Creative Leadership has certified me to use their 360-degree assessment tools.

What matters most to me in all this, is my relationship to good friends like you. Thank you for bringing smiles to my face, giving me moments of joy—and for just being you. Without your support, encouragement, and friendship, I couldn't have done it.

So, the next time you hitch the light rail down to Park Meadows, look me up. I'll be the guy in the rocking chair playing Pandora on the iPhone.
